The JRL memorial trials ride is held in the Maungatuks.

The deal is that you go there on Friday night and camp out. The club puts on a barbie and everyone has a great time sitting out under the stars telling true stories.

You stagger out on Saturday morning and are divided into groups according to whether you want to do a BIG ride or a middle ride or a little ride, basically according to your skill/ bravado/ fitness levels. Regardless of which you choose, you ride with the group so no matter what happens you have plenty of your mates to make sure things work out well.

You head off into the bush with a pack on your back with spare petrol and some food and emergency clothes, a few basic tools and a spare sparkplug, and you ride your heart out in the hills under the expert leadership of an expert and knowledgeable Maungies regular. Sidey recommends safety glasses to stop your eyes getting swiped by ferns and toitoi but apart from that you ride in your regular trials gear.

Anyway, everyone who goes has a fantastic time and this ride is a club institution. We always get some from Manawatu, Taranaki, even Hawkes Bay or Tauranga who wouldn't miss it.

The ride is a memorial for James Lawton, our last NZ champ before Jake. James was a thoroughly great guy and spent many happy hours in the Maungies and it is fitting that we remember him by doing as he so often did.

If you've been before I'm sure you'll want it again and if you haven't Sidey highly recommends that you check it out. You have nothing to lose but your blues!
