HARRIS AND BERNARD UNSUCCESSFUL AT 4 HOUR

Posted: Mon 16 Oct 2000

Taranaki’s Shaun Harris, teamed with Wanganui’s Brian Bernard, recovered from a minor accident during practice on Saturday morning, to qualify their Pirelli shod Suzuki GSXR 750 third fastest for the “Quality Hotel” 4 Hour at Manfeild.

Unfortunately their luck didn’t last.

The pair ran at the front of the field, with the Yamaha R1 of Rees and Gee, the Honda CBR900 of Hepburn and Clee, and the Kawasaki ZX 900 of Love and Fulton along with fellow Suzuki GSXR 750 pairing of Stroud and Coughey. Slowly but surely the favorites dropped away due to accidents and mechanical problems.

With the absence of the pairings of Love and Fulton, Clee and Hepburn along with Rees and Gee. Harris and Bernard were swapping the lead with Stroud and Coughey. But at the 2 hour 50 minutes mark, their machine developed unwelcome noises.

Harris pitted the bike and after some adjustments, Bernard returned to the track, only to retire the following lap.

When asked about his day Harris said “ It wasn’t the result we were hoping for but there is always next year.”
