Colin Edwards Castrol Honda got the Superpole and from No1 on the grid he got away well and was never headed cruising to a win with over 5 seconds to spare. He was followed home by Kawasaki’s Gregorio Lavilla and Ducati Infostrada’s Troy Bayliss.
Edwards said after the race. “The track feels a lot more slippery today and the first corner is the key I think. If you can get through that with no problems then you are as good as anyone for the race win. I don’t think I can change anything for the second race. I’m really happy with the set up and I have the hardest tyres that Michelin have.”
Juan Borja collided with a privateer on the first lap which put paid to his chances of a good result in Race one.
Haga who started 16th of the grid after a crash in Superpole goat high up the field as 6th but then fell back again to finish 9th. With Edwards 1st this is a major blow to his championship hopes.
Kawasaki rider Peter Goddard was judged to have jumped the start and awarded a stop/go penalty which put paid to his chances when he was running 7th.
Chilli was going well early on in second but as the race went on and his tyres went off he was quickly passed by Lavilla, Bayliss, Corser, Yanagawa and Slight in just two laps pushing Frankie back to 7th.
At the second to last corner on the last lap Corser overshot the corner and went through the gravel trap. He kept it up and rejoined the track and finished 7th and just to make his day as he crossed the finish line his engine blew up.
