Barros takes third pole for year, pushing Kenny Roberts back to second position. Barros coming from his win at Assen two weeks ago is in top form still. The weather played a part in practice again with showers over the track interrupting the session.
Roberts chose not to try to take pole back concentrating instead on setting the bike up. \"We made the judgment before the session that yesterday\'s time would be good enough for a front-row start, and spent the time putting laps on tires,\" Roberts Jr. said. \"Even when another rider took my provisional pole position away, I didn\'t change my purpose - and when I\'d put more than half race-distance on my tires I was still able to lap in the 1:32-second bracket. That makes me pretty confident for the race. With the better engine and chassis settings we found at the last race, I\'m sure that if I can stick with the Hondas early on, then I\'ll be able to beat them at the end of the race. If it rains, who knows? If it\'s just a light shower and we can wait it out in the pits, that\'s no problem. But if it\'s heavy rain, then I believe it will be dangerous. The Race Director should give the 500s some special practice. With the jet fuel from the airport next door, this track is notoriously slippery in the rain, and it just wasn\'t wet enough to test this morning.\"
Right at the end of the session Garry McCoy and his Red Bull put in a flyer and took third on the grid. Rossi fills out the front row.
