Kiwi-born motocrosser Josh Coppins retains fourth in the glamour world 250 championship after a solid ride through atrocious conditions in Belgium.

The 23-year-old outpointed his Corona Suzuki teammate Mickael Pichon (France), who leads the championship, to take a competitive sixth place overall in heavy mud at Kester, 25km from Brussels.

Overnight rain chopped up the rough track making passing difficult and Coppins was one of numerous top riders who had to fight back from a crash to carve out points.

The expat professional racer moved to 180 points in the title hunt and with six rounds remaining is 10 clear of the Yamaha of Italy\'s Claudio Federici (Italy).

Reigning world champion Fred Bolley of France won both races on his Honda to close up on Pichon.

World championship points:
1 Mickael Pichon (France) Corona- Suzuki 294 points,
2 Frédéric Bolley (France) Honda 270,
3 Pit Beirer (Germany) Kawasaki 221,
4 Joshua Coppins (NZ) Corona- Suzuki 190,
5 Claudio Federici (Italy) Yamaha 180,
6 Gordon Crockard (Britain) Honda 145.
