Loris Capirossi and Alex Barros were the quickest two riders when rain began falling with about half an hour to go in the first qualifying session for the 500cc GP at Assen.
With only 4 or 5 minutes to go in the session, the rain stopped and with the track drying out, the othere riders went back out to try to improve on times set in the rain. Capirossi improved his times to stay on top and Roberts moved up to second fastest.
Barros was 3rd, and Biaggi was 4th to fill out the provisional front row.
