Harley Davidson Motor Company has announced that it is dropping its application to trademark the sound of its V-twin engines.

In a statement Joanne Bischmann VP for marketing of H-D announced

\"More than six years have passed since we filed our application and there is still no end in sight. The process of registering this trademark has become more of an issue than the uniqueness of our sound and, frankly, we\'re tired of throwing tens of thousands of dollars out the window on litigation.\"

The original application to register the sound was approved by US Patent and trademark office . They agreed with HD that the sound of a HD identified and distinguished them from of motorcycles. Harley competitors opposed their application and so the lawyers rubbed their hands together and started litigation.

My Tow bob\'s worth: Maybe it might have worked if Harley\'s didn\'t come out of the factory with a whisper quiet exhaust system. Only after modification do they sound like the sound the factory was trying to trademark.
