Slight superbiker in Italy

Superbike hero Aaron Slight makes a comeback this weekend to the high-speed Misano circuit in Italy where he won both legs of the world championship round two years ago.

Looking for his first rostrum finish since his brain surgery in February, the expat Kiwi faces a weekend of practice and qualifying before Sunday\'s races at the San Marino round, event seven on the calendar.

\"I still feel a little tired now and then but other than that I feel better than I have done for years,\" said the 34-year-old from Masterton.

\"I\'ve had a couple of fifth places in the last few rounds so I\'d like to climb the rostrum soon, hopefully this weekend.\"

It won\'t be plain sailing. The 4.06km track 250km north of Rome has a reputation for testing the best.

Slight and arch-rival Carl Fogarty, the Britisher currently out with injury, are the only two riders of the modern era to win the double-header here.

Among Slight\'s greatest rivals will be his Castrol Honda teammate Colin Edwards who aims to extend his lead in the championship.

The 26-year-old American arrived at Misano after a test session in Japan last Friday and is optimistic about his chances.

\"I set the fastest time here at Misano when we tested in March so I\'m confident the VTR is the machine for the job around here.

\"I know there\'ll be a lot of passionate Italian fans cheering on their riders but I\'m ready to win Sunday\'s two races.\"

The Misano action starts with a one-hour free practice on Friday morning Italian time followed by an hour-long qualifying session in the afternoon. Saturday\'s action includes qualifying and the afternoon Superpole competition to determine the final grid positions for Sunday\'s two 25-lap races.

The legs themselves will be shown live on Sky Sport in New Zealand.
