The Otago Motorcycle Club hosted the NZ road hill climb championships last Sunday on 3 Mile hill. Fine weather made for fast times early in the day with Oamaru rider Brad Selfe setting the pace with a blistering sub minute run over the course, meaning an average speed of around 110kmhr through the twisty corners, and top speeds approaching 200km/hr up the start straight.

An early casualty was local rider Sean O\'Callaghan who slid off the road while powering around a corner. Sean escaped with a broken finger after landing in soft bushes over the bank. His bike was later recovered with mainly cosmetic damage thanks also to a soft landing. A further delay in racing occurred when one machine broke an oil hose spreading oil on the track. With most of the oil still on the road subsequent times slowed as rider became wary of the slippery surface.

Undeterred was local rider Doug Bell on his TZ250cc machine who took out the hotly contested 250 class with a blistering final run taking him from 3rd place up to first 1st, the winning margin only 1/10th of a second.

The Otago Motorcycle club paid out nearly $2000 in prize money to the top place getters with Brad Selfe taking the Bonus for Fastest run of the day along with his class win.

Otago Motorcycle club officials were delighted with the day and wish to thank those who supported the event, including the locals who were affected by the road closure, and Paramedical services for supply an ambulance for the day.
