Taupo Track Trauma

Even though the weather remained fine for the day\'s racing on Sunday there were a couple of spectacular falls. The most spectacular being Robbie Dean on his Aprilia RSV1000 Mille.

Robbie exited the hairpin and headed for the \'esses\' only to lose the back end under power (I assume) and highside the Aprilia in a major way. Robbie went end for end with arms and legs flying, as did the bike (except for the arms and legs bit). After a lengthy amount of time with the ambulance racing resumed.

Dean Fulton, NZ\'s current Superbike Championship winner, was having fun during the day. At the beginning of the day he was starting on pole position, this must have got a little boring however, as he was soon moving back through the grid to make things more challenging. By the end of racing Dean was starting at the back of the grid - being approximately 20 metres away from the second to last bike on the grid. Within one lap he was second, and then he spent a couple of laps \'playing\' with the lead bike until he streaked into the lead once more. It was amazing to see how quick the Kawasaki was, and how little track it needed to wind up.

Racing was close all day with several bikes coming into contact with each other at various points on the track.

Presentation of the bikes at the Centennial Raceway was spectacular also. In particular Jay Davis-Goodall on his Aprilia RS250 stood out for having an immaculately prepared bike.

The Pacific Motorcycle Club put on a well organised first round of the Taupo Summer Series, with the help of sponsorship from Twin City Motorcycles and Whitaker Honda. For information on entering the remaining two rounds of this series contact Robbert Adriaansen of the Pacific Motorcycle Club.
