Robert Holden - A Tribute

Posted: Thu 09 Dec 1999

In celebration of a life which brought excitement and pleasure to many thousands of motorcycle racing enthusiasts the Friends of Robert Holden Group has brought together a tribute to Robert.

This comprises a collection of some of the bikes Robert rode during his magnificent career.

Included are the “ Plastic Fantastic” Steve Roberts designed Coleman Suzuki on which Robert won the NZ F1 Title in 1984; the F2 Ducati on which he was virtually unbeatable on NZ Street Circuits; the historic Triumph Triple on which he won at Daytona plus other notable bikes such as the Ducati Supermono; the Ducati 888 which Robert raced at Daytona plus the Suzuki Aluminium F1 originally campaigned by David Hiscock in the world F1 champs in 1983 but also subsequently ridden by Robert.

The present owners have generously made these bikes available. We are still actively attempting to source other machines ridden by Robert which present owners may be prepared to display. If anyone has any information can they contact Rod Trott. [Details below]

In addition the Holden family and leading photographers have contributed some of their favourite photographic and video shots which capture some of the highlights of a fabulous 19 year racing career which tragically ended at the Isle of Man in 1996. It is planned that copies of these will be available for purchase.

In addition [subject to mechanical requirements] it is planned to demonstrate some or all of the bikes during the Wanganui Motor Cycle Club Boxing Day meeting. Former Sponsors will ride the bikes and racing mates of Robert in what we hope will be a fitting tribute to a great rider and a wonderful person.

WHEN: 26th December 1999 Boxing Day Wanganui during Cemetery Circuit Races.

WHERE: Suzuki New Zealand forecourt. Corner Taupo Quay/Heads Rd. Wanganui.

We have a feature pictorial available.
