Southern Man Scammell Scores

A true Kiwi story of a sporting comeback from adversity to triumph has seen southern man Brent Scammell wrap up the Southern Series motocross in Southland.

Going into the fourth of five rounds to win the series in which he was runner-up last year, the 31-year-old Castrol Honda teamster from Winton was showing younger riders the ropes in practice when he had a major crash on a slippery course at Mataura.

The popular Honda dealer found himself with a smashed nose, sprained ankle and pulled muscles in the back of a knee. But Scammell climbed back aboard the CR250RY and recorded a first, two seconds and a third despite once being taken out by a lapped rider as he held the lead.

That left the Castrol Honda in second overall going to the last round at Balclutha.

Riding through the pain barrier with knee and ankle strapped, the southern man took a second and first placings and needed victory in the final race for the championship win.

It started badly when Scammell was 11th away, but he fought his way through a talented field to nab the win and make it six titles from six entered this year.
