Top Trials Team for Oceania

Posted: Tue 19 Oct 1999

After a stunning one- two finish in the Australian Trials Championships held at Bendigo, Victoria last weekend New Zealand Trial aces Warren Laugesen and James Lawton will team up again with New Plymouth rider Wayne Thompson as the New Zealand Oceania Team to compete in this weekends Oceania Teams Championships in Wellington.

There are big expectations on Laugensen who is the current New Zealand Champion. His strong form at Bendigo bodes well for a winning Kiwi performance. Laugensen has spent the last couple of years competing in the English championships and placed a very credible 13th in the tough English open grade in 1997. A former Oceania team member in both \'97 and \'98, the 26 year old Napier rider will no doubt want to top his triple header with a big finish and the Oceania crown.

Laugensen is in no doubt about his success to date.

\"I\'ve ridden the Italian Beta 250 since 1992. Without a doubt it\'s the best trials bike in the world. I\'ve had a new one each year through the support of John Lawton in Kapiti and I can ride it straight out of the box.\"

Team mate James Lawton from Paraparaumu will ride an identical bike for the Oceania event. Lawson also competed in the \'97 Oceania but was unavailable for the \'98 round. With matching machinery and a matching desire to mount the winners podium a big return from Lawton can be expected.

Wayne Thompson will complete the team. This hard charging rider is competing in his first season in the top grade and will want to make a big impression after finishing a strong 10th in the Australian Championships.

The Oceania Trials Championships will be held over three days this Labour weekend with Day 1 being held in the Mungakotokutuku Valley, Day 2 on Perkins property, Paekakariki, and Day 3 in the Horokiwi quarry in Wellington.
