MOMCC Trial August 09

Posted: Fri 21 Aug 2009

A good turnout of 17 riders took part in the Bruce & Bai Cup Trial held in Bushriders territory near Mangatinoka. This included three new Pahiatua riders from the Bushriders Club. Simon Windleborn and his 11 year old son Austin both shared a recently purchased Scorpa 250 and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed the trials experience. (And I believe a second bike is on the cards). The other new rider was James Mangin and he shared Phil Stephenson’s Gas Gas.

Phil and Steve set out eight sections in the Infracon “lime pit” quarry and they were all rideable for all grades although very challenging. Limestone quarries always are with small loose rocks continually moving under the tyres in the sections. There were also plenty of large rocks for the higher grades to attack as well, not only climbing them but descending a few as well. Warrick George was the only A Grade rider with the “balls” to launch off one large rock in section five and land on another large rock both 1.5 metres below and away. The landing pad was less than a bike length across so required a rear wheel landing and a quick throttle blip to then relaunch off this rock to the ground another .75 metre below. He pulled it off on all four laps without a crash (which would have caused pain). Although he executed the spectacular part of the section well he messed up the bit before it and ended up on 12 points on this section for the day. On the other hand I took a less spectacular line through the section (but still not easy) and only lost four points. Moral of the story – Warrick’s got bigger balls than me.

Adrian Walcroft is another recent newcomer to the sport and rides a 70’s vintage Yamaha TY175. It’s amazing how after 30 plus years these brilliant little bikes still give great service and enjoyment to their owners. There wouldn’t have been a more reliable trials bike ever made and they are still a great “starter” bike for anyone wanting to get into the sport – if you can find one. The club actually owns one of these TY175’s and if anyone wants to come along and have a go on it they are welcome. Just contact Merv George (06 323 6146) or myself to arrange it.

Riding the easier Social Grade lines through the sections Adrian posted the lowest score of the day by an MOMCC rider in any grade. This makes him the winner of the Bruce & Bai Cup. Conratulations Adrian.

Although there was light rain throughout the day everyone seemed to enjoy thier days riding. The next club trial is round four of the club champs and is set for September 20th. The venue is another Infracon quarry - the big one at the end of Kendalls Line, Linton, south of Palmy.
