Townley misses opportunity at Steel City.

Heavy downpours during the week threatened to mix up the 10th round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Nationals at the Steel City Raceway in Delmont PA. Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit Kawasaki/ racer, Ben Townley, came into the event with a two point lead but had to leave Steel City with a 6 point deficit over fellow Kawasaki team-mate Ryan Villopoto.

Townley seemed to have the upper hand on the soft, muddy terrain with his previous GP motocross experience however a pileup at the start of moto 1 left the hard working Kiwi with a mammoth task. As he carved his way through the pack, Townley would go down another two times before being able to salvage 6th spot by the end of a grueling moto.

Looking to turn the tables in moto 2, Townley unfortunately made another error on the opening lap but quickly remounted to stay in the top ten. He set a blistering pace to shut down team-mate Villopoto by the end of the moto but to no avail as Villopoto took the win and overall with BT in second and fellow Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team-mate Brett Metcalfe making it an all green podium for the second consecutive weekend.

“I got involved in the first turn crash – it was pretty much a domino effect with quite a few riders going down. I managed to get back to fifth but then went down again and ended up 6th which was I was disappointed with. I changed my gate for the second moto and went a little wider, had a bad jump and went down on the end of the first lap again. I got back up and charged through the pack and felt like I was hauling but those crashes let me down today. I’ve got to minimize those mistakes and get some points back in Texas next week” explained Townley.

With two rounds left of the 12 round series, Townley heads west to the newly built Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas on September 1-2 to keep in the hunt for the coveted Motocross Lites title.
