MAY 16, 2007: The people at Yamaha recognise a good thing when they see it.
Yamaha figures Mike Britton's adventure trail bike experience is a good thing, so much so that the motorcycle company has loaned a fleet of dirt bikes to the Waikato man to help him maintain his service to the community.
Britton has just picked up a 2007-model Yamaha WR450 enduro bike, a TTR250 medium-sized trail bike and an XT660R dual-purpose adventure bike.
Britton will use the bikes as he leads his increasingly popular guided adventure tours.
“I have no background in competition racing but that hasn’t held me back and I am a mad keen dirt bike rider, confesses Britton.”
The numbers of people turning out for trailing riding event around the country is huge. It’s a real growth area for motorcycling and I aim to help that along. We organise several types of rides -- one-day events and multi-day fully guided adventure tours and we have them all over the country, from the bottom of the South Island to the top of the North Island.
“We also have mini trail rides and family fun days and try to focus with those on encouraging the entry-level dirt bike riders.
“The family fun days are our point of difference with other trail adventure groups,” said Britton.
“We give tips and trail riding advice, to help build their riding skills and confidence up.”
With the winter months quickly arriving, Britton and his crew have just completed their pre-winter ride programme which included a four-day fully-guided trail ride in the Far North.
“It’s called the Northern Exposure ride and started at Cable Bay and takes in all of the region, right through from North Cape to Hokianga and north of the Bay of Islands. From the top of the North Island to the top of the South Island with the two-day self-navigated ride organised for the Marlborough region in May, around Canvastown, near Picton and Nelson.”
Yamaha New Zealand's Peter Payne praised the work done by Britton and said these organised trail adventure rides were an asset to the nation's motorcycling community.
“We want to do all we can to foster the growth of motorcycling and enhance people's enjoyment of riding motorcycles off-road,” he said. “It's great to have Mike Britton in the Yamaha family.”
