Shayne King battled fiercly in Sweden

Posted: Fri 27 Aug 1999

Date: 21/22 August 1999
Event: World 500cc Motocross Championships - Round 12
Venue:Uddevalla, Sweden
Weather Conditions: Cold with heavy showers

RACE ONE: Shayne made a good start and on the first lap was around 8th place. He passed a couple of riders & was in 6th trying to pass Bartolini for 5th when the bike developed gearbox problems. \"I selected 3rd gear and instead got neutral. By the time I managed to find another gear I was back around 5 places. This kept repeating until I was around 25th place. I then made some time forward using only 2nd and 4th gears which was pretty difficult. I got up to 16th and over the last couple of laps there was a serious vibration which was pretty scary. I was just hoping I could get into the points and not be pushing the bike. On the last lap I managed to pass Eckenbach for 15th and 1 point so that was at least something.\"

RACE TWO: Shayne got a great start out of the gate. Coming into the first corner he had to avoid hitting Bartolini and instead was hit by another rider. \"When I tried to miss Bartolini another rider, I think it was Peter Johansson got in front and took my front wheel out. I went down hard. I thought I had broken my elbow, as I had no feeling and couldn\'t bend it. It took time to get my bike from under a pile of bikes and remount.\" By this time Shayne was around 1 minute behind the leaders & over 45 seconds behind 15th place. He rode hard, never giving up getting to 16th position - around 2 seconds behind 15th setting the fastest time of the race. \"To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement as I was hoping to move into 4th position this weekend, not move down the table & hopefully I can reverse this at Finland next weekend.
