Womens MX: Gillespie chases Kiwis

Motorex KTM factory rider Kristy Gillespie has commenced her motocross season for the year at Newry in Victoria, taking on the opening round of the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship on the weekend.

Gillespie raced in two 15 minute motos securing second in her first moto and third in her final moto, which accumulated enough points for second on the day, yet a count back put her final position as third in the championship.

Commenting on her racing Gillespie said, “There are at least six girls in this championship who could claim the title but the dominance will come from the Kiwi’s, particularly Katherine Prum who holds the Women’s World Motocross title.

“In my first moto I was running third behind Katherine Prum and last year’s Australian Motocross winner Emma Davis. We battled for quite a few laps then Katherine made a pass on Emma to take the lead. I also passed Emma and I was only a bike length from Katherine before we crossed the finish line. Given that she is world champion, I was stoked to be so close to her near the finish line. Emma struggled a little and Australian rider Ashley Baits took third.

“In the second moto Katherine took off in the lead and I was battling with Ashley Baits for second, Ashley ended up pulling away to take second and I got third. We finished equally on points when combining both motos. Ashley secured second overall on the day due to a count back because her combined results were in a higher position, so overall I got third.

“I’m satisfied with my results but I will be looking to improve on them at the next round. Katherine Prum is the benchmark for all Aussie female racers since she holds the world title and is the fastest out on the track.

“I know Katherine’s lap times and what I need to do to catch her so I’ll be putting in some hard training on the KTM 250 SX-F in hope of matching her at the next round.”

The second round of the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship takes place on June 3 at Lakes in NSW. Gillespie will next race this weekend at the Arena Cross Series in Dapto, NSW which she currently leads. Results will be posted at
