What a pity. Taupo is jam-packed with some of the best motorcyclists from around the world for one of the sports premier events, the sun is shining, the 2nd round of the VMX series has drawn record entries but no-one in Taupo seems to know about either event.
OK, this was a pretty informal poll taken on a two-hour stroll around the downtown shops and parks of Taupo. But everyone of the dozen or so people I spoke to were either in one of these events, or had not heard anything about them.
I'm sure that a lot of people do know about the six-day but can you imagine anyone in Beijing not knowing that they were soon to be hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics?
The bizarre thing is that the town is full of Swedes, Germans, Italians, Nth & Sth Americans - most with brightly coloured riding gear - and they may as well have just hopped out of a passing tourist bus for all the impact they've made.
Hopefully by next Sunday a few more people will know that there is a world-class event happening in their town.
