Surprises at Annual MC Awards

Posted: Tue 06 Dec 2005

Some 400 guests packed the Carlton Hotel’s ballroom in Auckland on Saturday night for the annual NZ Motorcycle Awards Dinner.

Produced by NZ Motorcycle Trader and News (MTN), the gala black tie event honoured the people, and machinery that made 2005 a bumper year for the motorcycle industry, and motorcycle sport.

The world class event is now in its third year and has become a regular fixture on the sporting calendar.

Yamaha’s MT-01 was the surprise winner of Motorcycle of the Year. Known as a ‘muscle bike’ the 1600cc V-twin has the same size engine as many family saloon cars.

Yamaha’s NZ Superbike Champion Tony Rees, who retired from road racing last month, won the Road Rider of the Year, and Honda’s Josh Coppins who finished second in the World MX Championship, took out the Off-road Rider of the Year.

With four World Championships to his credit, New Zealand’s most successful road racer Hugh Anderson, was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Both Anderson and nine times World Speedway, Ivan Mauger, made inspirational speeches encouraging young riders to take on the world.
