Honda Red Dominent Colour at Timaru

Fresh from their triumphs at round one, the Castrol Honda Rider riders traveled to South Canterbury for Round Two of the SsangYong New Zealand Motocross Championships at Waimate, just south of Timaru over the 10/11 September weekend.

The South Canterbury Motorcycle Club, Hosts for the event, have spent considerable time and effort preparing the track, for what is their biggest meeting of the year. Saturday’s practice was highlighted by a visit from Mr Don Brash in Timaru on the election trail and keen to see some action.

Sunday morning dawned very foggy, but as the weather cleared the riders were presented with a magnificent, well prepared, natural terrain course. Of the hundred plus entries, sixty were Hondas, so the RED flags were definitely flying high.

Defending Champion New Plymouth’s Shayne King, took his Honda CRF 450 to three seconds behind Hawera’s Daryl Hurley (Suzuki). King was ably supported by team-mates Upper Hutt’s Corrie Sargent who picked up two thirds and Tauranga’s Peter Bloxholme a fourth and a third, both also on CRF 450s.

In the 250cc class, King (Defending champion), Opotiki’s Cody Cooper and Broxholme battled all day with an on fire Luke Burkhart (Suzuki) from Masterton. King finished the day with one win, a second and a third, to Burkhart's two wins and a second. Cooper picked up a second and a third, while Broxholme claimed a third and a fourth.

Cooper continued his dominance in the 125cc Class with a further three wins from three starts on his Honda CRF 250, giving him a commanding lead on 150 points.

Tauranga’s Mary Perkins took her Honda CRF 250 to three seconds behind Pukekohe’s Katherine Prumm, who recently returned to New Zealand having finished second in the Women’s World Motocross Gold Cup, Perkins hones her skills between rounds competing in the Australian Xtreme Games.
