RED RIDERS HEAD SOUTH

Following a very successful Round One at Taupo on August 27/28, the Castrol Honda Red Riders motocross team move south for Round Two of the SsangYong New Zealand Motocross Championship in Waimate District, just south of Timaru this weekend September 10/11.

Taupo’s soft pumice track, which cut up rough in places, created a very demanding environment for riders but resulted in some amazing racing.

Opotiki’s Cody Cooper took his Honda CRF 250 to three wins from three starts in the 125cc class, giving him a good start on his campaign to retake the Championship crown he missed last season by just one point. To add to his big day, this season Cooper is also racing in the 250cc class. He took his CR250 to a win, a second and a fourth, to be second on the points table behind team leader New Plymouth’s Shayne King.

King, the reigning 250cc Champion had some great battles with team-mate Cooper to finish the day with two wins and a third, to be leading the 250cc class by five points. King, also competing in two classes, started his defence of his 500cc crown, finishing the day with a win and two seconds on his Honda CRF450, after battling younger brother Darryll (Yamaha) and reigning 125cc Champion Hawera’s Daryl Hurley (Suzuki). Also in that mix were hard charging teammates Upper Hutt’s Corrie Sargent and Tauranga’s Peter Bloxholme both on CRF 450s.

With the Castrol Honda Red Riders holding, 1st in the 125cc class. 1st, 2nd and 4th in the 250cc and 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 500cc class. The team is really looking forward to round two this weekend and will be the force to be reckoned with.
