Ducati have finally confirmed what everyone already new -
that they are developing a replacement for the 916/996.
However, they are not in a hurry to replace the current bike, the
new bike is slated for launch in 2001 (the real millenium :-)
The Team R&D (what a give away) bike ridden by
Doriano Romboni in the World Superbike Championship is being
used as the development test bed for the engine for the new bike.
The basic layout of the engine is to remain as now - 996cc
90 degree V-twin with 4 desmodromically operated valves per cylinder, although
it is likely to be more over-square (bigger bore and shorter stroke) so it should
be able to rev its nuts off.
One of the most exciting developments for the new engine is a
dry cassette gearbox. This will allow quick box changes.
As to the styling, I guess the gauntlet is out for them
to make it sexier than the new MV, a difficult but not impossible
task.
