2005 NZ JUNIOR MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP:

Record entries seen over 290 competitors gather to compete in the 2005 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships, supported by Kawasaki & Fuchs Silkolene High Performance Oils. The annual gathering of New Zealand’s supreme junior talent with a handful of Australian’s thrown into the mix, competed to win one of the five nationals crowns up for grabs.

Joel Doeksen (Yamaha) of Clevedon dominated the 8-10yrs 85cc class by winning eight of the nine races, over three grueling days of racing.

Also winning eight of his nine races to dominate in the 11-12yrs 85cc class was Ricoh Flavell (Honda) of Taupo.

Matt Hunt (Yamaha) of Gisborne had a convincing nine wins from nine races to win the 12-14yrs 125cc class. Hunt adds this victory to his previous three New Zealand titles, making it four in the last five season’s.

Kirk Bezzant (Kawasaki) of Cambridge made the most of his last appearance at a NZ Junior Championship by winning the championship in the 15-16yrs 125cc class by a 25 point margin.

The feature class for the weekend’s racing was the 13-16yrs 85cc class. Racing between Michael Menchi (KTM) of Paraparumu, Mason Wilkie (Suzuki) of Masterton and Brad Groombridge (Kawasaki ) of Taupo could not have been closer. Going into the final race only seven points separated them. Although Mason won the race by only a mere second over Brad and a margin of 26 seconds over Michael, it was not enough to crown him overall champion. Michael winning the title by two points.
