Darryll falls in Germany

Posted: Tue 15 Jun 1999

Event: Round 6 World 500cc Motocross Championship
Date: 06/13/99
Venue: Teutschenthal, Germany
Weather Conditions: Hot & Sunny
Track Conditions: Technical with lots of jumps and no passing line.
Qualifying: 3rd. in Group A

Race 1: I had a great start. 4th out of the turn one and right with the leaders. I moved into 3rd a few corners later and was right behind Smets and Johanason. On the 3rd lap my footpeg broke completely off as I took off from the jump. I had nothing to land on and had a huge crash. I hit the ground and then the bank on the side of the track and then I had to avoid the other 37 riders who were coming over the jump right at me. I really hit my head as well and both my shoulders. I have skin off all over. (Ouch!!)

Race 2: I went down in the first turn and was last. By the second lap I was up to 15th but I then had another big crash over the front of the bike when my hand came off the handlebar over a jump. That was the end of my day. I was very lucky not to do serious damage to myself.

Comments: I am totally gutted as well as very sore and stiff. This was not the day I wanted or planned for, but I have no broken bones and I am a good healer. The world Championship is never easy but you never want to have a GP like this. We have 3 weekends off now, my body really needs some time out after today.

Overall on the day-
Overall for the Championship6th.
Next eventEngland Grand Prix July 14th.

Best regards, Darryll King.
