Unlucky Start to the Belgian Championship:

Two races of misfortune - then redemption in the third, summed up Ben Townley’s start to the Belgian Motocross Championship in Moerbeke today. The unfortunate Kiwi got caught up in a loose lying track side rope in the early stages of heat one and it took marshals almost a lap to untangle the obstruction from the KTM’s back wheel before Townley could get going again!! BT managed to salvage four points, however the damage had already been done.

Townley showed great speed in the second race of the day and made his way past Melotte, Strijbos and Smets and went in search of Everts and team-mate Ramon who was leading. As Townley started to close down Everts and Ramon, KTM rider and bike went missing. A destroyed back sprocket had dealt another blow to the day of disappointments.

Looking to redeem himself in the final race of the day, Townley started off just outside the top ten and by the third lap he had shaken off the rest of the field and was breathing down Everts’ neck and challenging for the lead. The two rivals matched each other lap for lap until Everts started to pull a gap on his young challenger. Smets capitalized on Townley’s slight break in rhythm and slipped by the New Zealander.
BT fought back but could not make an impression and had to settle for third.

“Well it’s not the start I expected” explained the disappointed Kiwi. “There was nothing I could do about the first two races and that makes any title hopes more difficult. My speed was really good and it’s only a matter of time before I can develop the strength to keep it up”.
