Pukekohe – The Final Showdown:

Pukekohe Park Raceway is the venue of the final round of the Motorcycle Trader and News NZ Road Race Championship. Following drainage repairs, resealing of the track was completed only yesterday, leaving the country's top racers to do battle on a surface which is likely to be greasy – as all new surfaces are until weathered. A further complication is the new seal starts half way into the ‘Hill’ corner - a delicate place for the grip level to change as riders will be under hard braking at over 160kmh. Loss of traction on the front wheel at this point spells disaster, as riders will tumble into a hard trackside tyre wall.

Of all New Zealand circuits, Pukekohe is a the fastest, with Superbike top speeds approaching 320kmh down the long back straight. Riders with the fastest bikes will have a definite advantage, although a higher top speed means they have to brake earlier for the first gear hairpin at the end of the straight. Allowing the field to close again. With the top six or seven Superbike riders so close at Manfield last weekend, Pukekohe should hold some great high-speed racing for the spectators.

Jared Love learned a lot about his Castrol Honda CBR1000RR at Manfield, particularly how to set the suspension up correctly on an extremely bumpy circuit - past its use-by date. Pukekohe is smoother, so he will be able to lay the power down earlier to finish higher up the race order. “It was great racing and battling at Manfield, but we’re now looking for better results. Dean and myself are the fastest starters, as we proved last weekend, so we’re going to control the race from the front,” Love said, before heading to Pukekohe for Friday practice.

Saturday racing begins at 3.30pm, and 11.15am on Sunday.
