LAWRENCE MAKING A BIG NOISE:

Yamaha's Adam Lawrence is a young man who's making a big noise in New Zealand and not just because he rides a powerful motocross bike. The 16-year-old from Onga Onga, in Central Hawke's Bay, has only been racing motocross since 2000 but he's packed a lot of learning into the past four seasons, culminating with him winning the New Zealand junior 125cc supercross title in January.

“That's definitely the biggest highlight so far,” he said, hinting that he doesn't plan to stop punctuating his riding career with highlights for a little while yet.
It's probably no surprise that Lawrence has taken so quickly to motocross. He was, after all a bicycle motocross (BMX) champion before taking up the engine-powered version of the dirt track sport. During his four years racing BMX he won two national titles and, he says, that gave him a good foundation in motocross.

He was one of the junior 125cc class favourites at the big annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville in January but had a day to forget. “It was a bummer last race for me. I crashed while coming second and ended up 33rd in that race. That put me down to 12th overall for the day.”

In the meantime, the next big date for Lawrence and his Yamaha YZF250 is the New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships in New Plymouth in April
