Young Stars Shine at Manfeild:

Nineteen-year-old Hayden Fitzgerald (New Plymouth) secured his first 600 Sports Production race, on his Bernard Racing Suzuki GSX600, at Round Three of the Motorcycle Trader & News Championship today Saturday 26 Feb at Manfeild Autocourse. Fitzgerald battled the best of New Zealand’s road racers, current 600 Sports Production Champion New Plymouth’s Shaun Harris and current Superbike Champion Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud both also on Suzuki GSXR 600s, to take the win.

The premier Superbike class saw Yamaha’s Tony Rees (Whakatane) lead from the start only to be passed by Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) on the last lap just two corners from home, however the passing move was done under yellow flags so the win was given to Rees.

In the smaller 125cc Grand Prix class, youth again shone through. The race developed into a battle between Jay Lawrence from Wellington and defending Champion young Englishman Midge Smart, with Smart coming out the victor.

Foxton’s Jason Easton dominated the Formula Three class on his Tigcraft Yamaha 465 and Kirwee’s Hayden Bool convincingly took out the 250 Grand Prix class.

Ex Champions Andy Scrivener/ Chris Meads took out the sidecars on their Sowerby 1300.
