Team Green’s "Young Guns" had a mixed day, Rotorua’s Michael Phillips scored a sixth, a seventh and a third, to finish the day fourth overall in the 125cc class. While young Australian Josh Strang (just out of Juniors) came home eighth and Hamilton rider Jesse Wiki eleventh.
One of the best results of the day must go to Ben Thomasen, who brought his KDX200 (virtually a stock trail bike) home tenth overall in the 125cc class.
The senior members of Team Green also featured strongly in the results.
Norsewood’s Kevin Hermansen took his AFC Motorcycles: KX 250 R1 to three wins in the support class races on Saturday and he scored maximum points in the feature "River Race" on the Sunday by convincingly winning both races.
Hermansen didn’t lead from the start, but passed several riders in the river to take control and ultimately the wins.
In the 35-39 years Veterans class, we saw an epic battle develop between Christchurch’s Graeme Allen on his Superior motorcycles KX250F and Palmerston North’s Leon Andrews on his AFC Motorcycles KX250F for second and third places with Allen eventually coming out on top. "The crowd really love it, when the old icons go out to do battle," said race commentator Neil Ritchie.
But the highlight of the weekend for Team Green came at Sunday evening’s prize giving when Michael Phillips was awarded the coveted "Neil Ritchie Commentator’s Award" for Most Outstanding Motocross Rider - a well deserved win.
