Daryl Hurley Was The Man:

The much awaited clash between Shayne King and Daryl Hurley went in Hurley’s favour as did everything else on the day. Riding Suzuki's RM-Z450K and showing all the skills he picked up in the white hot heat of AMA racing, he was the dominant rider on the very well prepared and dust free track. Even when he did not get the best start - Hurls was able to claw his way through the field and when he hit the front, he was gone.....

The HONDA INTERNATIONAL MOTOCROSS GP was run for the 44th time at Woodville and Daryl Hurley (Hawera) won the Tim Gibbes Trophy, winning the International feature race for the 40 fastest riders. Hurley got the holeshot in that race and was clearing 36 metres in distance on the jumps. Corrie Sargent (Wellington) was trailing in second with Shayne King (New Plymouth) finishing up third.

Hurley also took the 500cc GP Title over three races without dropping any points. The brothers King filled the minor placings, Shayne (Honda CRF450)second and Damien (Yamaha YZ450) in third.

Shayne King, who has won more GP titles then any other rider, didn’t add to his tally. He took on a huge racing programe in one day in very hot and dusty conditions. His teammate Peter Broxholme (Tauranga, Honda CRF250) headed him off in the 250cc class with Michael Cotter (Cambridge, Kawasaki KX250) taking out the third place.

There was a boil over in the 125 class with current Australian and Oceania Champion, Cody Cooper (Mt Maunganui, Honda CRF250) pipped by the in-form Luke Burkhart (Masterton, Suzuki RMZ250). Burkhart is drawing attention to himself having now won a Supercross and GP title in a calendar month.

Another feature of the GP is the River Race. A motocross that includes a Le Mans start and a section through a river. Well performed enduro rider Kevin Hermanson (Dannevirke) showed he and his AFC sponsored Kawasaki KX250 are genetically suited to wet conditions winning both river races.
