Josh Coppins leaves his home town, Motueka for Italy this week to commence his eleventh World Motocross Championship campaign. He and Daryl Hurley were the box office attractions at the first two rounds of the New Zealand National Supercross in Motueka at the weekend.
Summer sport and winter weather do not combine well. Poor weather on Saturday meant a delayed start to round 1, that didn’t worry Coppins (Honda) who went on to win all three races in the 125 class.

He didn’t have as much luck on Sunday (round two) but he still leaves the land of the long dark cloud with a points lead in the 125 Supercross Championship. Luke Burkhart (Masterton - Suzuki), who beat Coppins once, and Scott Columb (Queenstown - Suzuki) are the most likely heirs to the championship as current holder Darryll King is injured.

Daryl Hurley (Suzuki) showed everyone that his AMA experience counts and produced the perfect scores on both days in the 250cc class. The 28-year-old from Hawera, crowned national 125cc motocross champion in October, blasted his Suzuki RM250 to six wins from six starts over the two consecutive nights, Saturday and Sunday, and built himself a healthy 20-point advantage over Tauranga's Peter Broxholme in the premier 250cc class. About this time last year, Hurley won a round of the World Supercross in Spain on a heavy track and who knows what he would have achieved had he been at a very wet Anaheim on the weekend??

Hamish Dobbyn (Warkworth) is unbeaten in the 11-12 year old 85cc; Matthew Hunt (Gisborne) leads the 12-14 years. Mason Wilkie (Masterton) has a two point lead in the Junior 85cc class- Adam Lawrence (Hawke’s Bay) leads the Junior 125 class by one point.

The final round is in Tokoroa on Saturday evening.
