The Dakar Has Started:

At this time of the year there is not a lot happening - unless you are riding to Dakar of course.

The 2005 Dakar consists of sixteen stages, including two marathon stages. The total distance of the event is 8,956 km and the special stage distance is 5,431 km.
It is not the function of this site to keep you up to date on International events but you can follow this annual battle of man and machine against unforgiving terrain on the Official Site: or with the daily reports on Cyclenews.Com:

Included in their report on the first day is: "David Fretigne started strongly and won the stage, riding his WR450 across the finish line some eight seconds ahead of Gauloises KTM’s Cyril Despres.
Fretigne rode a standard WR450 and not the two-wheel-drive version that he will use later in the rally."
