Anstey Increases His Superbike Lead:

The on/off rain and wind were a contributing factor in the results of Round Two of the Motorcycle Trader & News Road Race Championships held at Teretonga Raceway, just outside Invercargill today, December 12. The weekend saw some amazing battles develop on the racetrack after the hard choices regarding which tyres to run had been made.

The Suzuki NZ Superbike class had Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) and Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Yamaha) fighting for the win in the first two races, but tyre choice for the last race in the changing conditions saw Stroud and Rees battling for fifth.

Ex. Pat Bruce Anstey, home from the UK for the Summer Series, showed everyone a clean set of heels on his Suzuki, to win comfortably from Auckland’s Ray Clee (Suzuki) second and Tauranga’s Dean Fulton (Honda) third.

The SsangYong NZ 600 Sport Production class again lived up to it’s reputation with Isle of Man TT winner New Plymouth’s Shaun Harris taking out the first two races, the first from Andrew Stroud (Suzuki) and the second from Palmerston North’s Craig Shirriffs. But the contest of the day was between Timaru’s Johnny Hepburn (Kawasaki) and Stroud in the last 600 race, run in the wet.

Hepburn lead for eight laps after getting a blinding start, only to be passed by Stroud in a shoulder to shoulder manoeuvre on the last lap.

"If there is a gap I will take it," said Stroud after the race. "I thought I had him (Stroud) covered, " replied Hepburn.

The last race of the day, the "SOUTHERN SPIRIT OF SPEED", was won by hard charging Jason Easton from Foxton on his little Tigcraft 465, from Formula Three Champion, Terry Fitzgerald (New Plymouth) on his SV 650 Suzuki, with young Midge Smart third on his Honda RS 125.
