Close Racing Continues At New Zealand Road Race Championship:

The cream of New Zealand’s road racers have descended on Invercargill this weekend for Round Two of the Motorcycle Trader & News Road Race Championships. The wet and windy conditions of yesterday practice session had abated to being just cold and blustery, but with a dry track.

Race one of the Suzuki NZ Superbike class saw a four way battle develop between, defending Champion, Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud (Suzuki), Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Yamaha), Tauranga’s Dean Fulton (Honda) and ex-pat (Wellington) Bruce Anstey, home for the Summer Series from the UK, on another Suzuki. The lead changed several times with Stroud taking the win by a couple of bike lengths from Rees.

The SsangYong NZ 600 Sports Production class also saw the close racing of last weekend’s Grand Prix meeting at Ruapuna, continue. Defending champion, New Plymouth’s Shaun Harris battled 2002 Champion Palmerston North’s Craig Shirriffs and series co-points leader Hamilton’s Andrew Stroud, all three are on board Suzuki GSXR 600s.
Harris showed his years of experience to pass Shirriffs on the last lap to take today’s win.

The Formula Three class saw the battle between reigning Champion Terry Fitzgerald (New Plymouth) on his Suzuki SV 650 and Jason Easton (Foxton) on his Tigcraft Yamaha 465 continue. The pair shared the honours last weekend, with Fitzgerald coming out on top today.

Tomorrow will see two races for all championship classes.
