NZ MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL

The final round of the SSANGYONG NZ MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP 2004 takes place this Sunday at the Pukekohe Motorcycle Club’s track at Harrisville just outside Pukekohe.

125 Riders Championship
Daryl Hurley (Hawera) has been collecting championship points as well as air points. Since the championship started in August, Hurley (Suzuki) has returned to America to race twice as well as being our best performed rider in the prestigious Motocross of Nations held in Holland, earlier this month. With 75 points on offer, Hurley holds a slender three point lead over reigning NZ and Australian Champion, Cody Cooper (Whakatane). Cooper (Honda) finds himself in a similar position to last year when he pulled out his best at the last round, and on the same track. Scott Columb (Queenstown - Suzuki) is clinging onto third with Luke Burkhart (Masterton) and Barry Morris (Wellington) pressing hard.

250 Riders Championship
Honda rider Shayne King (New Plymouth) owns this title, he returned himself to the premium slot after round three at Trentham scoring his sixth win of the series. Suzuki’s Danny Ham (Australia) is only two points in arrears but he isn’t returning for the last round. This throws the popular and ever so consistent Peter Broxholme (Tauranga - Honda) into contention with Shaun Fogarty (Gisborne) and local rider Nigel Smith also wanting to claim positions on the podium.

500 Riders Championship
Shayne King holds the series lead by 12 points from brother Darryll (Hamilton). Darryll King (Yamaha) looked very impressive winning all three races at Trentham in the third round. Corrie Sargent (Wellington - Honda) has had a good series and sits two points behind in third. If Darryll King wins the class, he will complete a rare double – The NZ and Australian Open Titles in the same year.

Women’s Riders Championship
This two round series started in Timaru. Pukekohe High School student and MNZ High Performance rider, Katherine Prumm (16) will only have to finish one race to take out the series. Prumm (Kawasaki) cleared away from the outset. Since that time, she outclassed the field in the final round of the Australian Women’s Championship and made the last 12 in the Nescafe Big Break Awards for young achievers. Prumm has a 10 point lead over another young rider- Elyse Wadsworth (Marlborough) with Mary Perkins (Hastings) two points further back.
