Mechanical Failure Besets Kiwis

From - Glen Dempsey

The New Zealand motocross team of Josh Coppins, Daryl Hurley and Ben Townley has finished a disappointing seventh in the Motocross of Nations held in Lierop, Holland, over the weekend. Mechanical failure was the poison chalice.

The campaign started well enough with the Kiwis qualifying fourth on Saturday behind Belgium, Holland and South Africa.

Sunday also started well. After the first race - which ended up being the only race where all three riders finished – we held a four point lead over the field.
After that, the mechanical Gods intervened.

Townley's bike packed up in the second race and he recorded a DNF. That dropped the team to seventh, a position they were unable to improve upon in the final race after Coppin’s bike had a mechanical crisis and he too was unable to finish.

Belgium retained the crown with Holland and France making it a European lock out.

The team manager, Mike McLeod, speaking from the track said, ‘Its very disappointing, after such a good buildup and a brilliant start our hopes were high”
