Anita Merriman has kindly taken the trouble to keep us up to date with son, Stefan's results this weekend in Greece. She has also tracked fellow kiwi born Paul Whibley,s result on day one.
Rounds 13/14 of the Enduro World Championships kicked off in the town of Serres, 40km from the Bulgarian boarder. After checking the cost of transporting the caravan and car on the ferry ($3600) to Greece, Stefan and Lexy decided to travel with the team in their Volkswagen Transporter. This turned out to be a very arduous ride. 450km of windy up and down hills, slow traffic and narrow roads.
Stefan's first nights experience of the cooking in Serres had him laid up for three days with food poisoning (just what he needed with a World Round looming!!!) He managed to drag himself from his bed on Friday to try and walk some special tests with the help of buckets of Gatorade.!!!
Weather is fine 17deg at 9am, however Lexy said it was 28degrees yesterday.
The round consisted of 195km of rough terrain, 5cross tests, 3enduro tests and 4 time checks. Stefan and his team mate Oblucki were the fastest riders on the track for the day. Stefan put in some great times and was winning his class and the overall when he went into stage 8.
With the previous 3 days taking their toll and riding with severe stomach cramps Stefan let off the throttle as he had enough advantage over Oblucki going into this last stage, however Salminen who was 3 seconds behind Stefan posted a faster time. This did not worry Stefan as the overall is not being recognised the same in the World Championship rounds.
Day 2, tomorrow will determine if Stefan has won the World Championship without having to ride the German round on 16/17th October.
