MNZ - Press Release:

SSANGYONG NZ 2004 NATIONAL MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS - ROUND 3:

Since round two of the SSANGYONG NZ 2004 MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP Ben Townley has won the World MX2 title and this weekend, Josh Coppins will almost definitely secure third place in World MX1.

Australasia’s best motocross assets will be at the Trentham Racecourse on Sunday for what may be the most critical round in the 2004 Riders’ Championship. All current Australian, New Zealand and Oceania champions will be there along with Shayne King, who until recently, was the only NZ World Motocross Championship winner(1996).

In contrast to the first two rounds that have been on natural farmland, the host club - Kapi Mana, is building the only man-made course of the series inside the racetrack. The same course was built for the 2003 championship.

125 Riders Championship - Daryll Hurley (Hawera) is leading the tightest series for many years from reigning champion Cody Cooper (Opotiki). Cooper took a real shine to this track last year winning all three races on his way to lifting the title. During the recess, Scott Columb (Queenstown) has won the 25th Southern Series in Alexandra, beating Cody Cooper into third.

Points
Hurley (Suzuki) 123, Cooper (Honda) 114, Columb (Suzuki) 97, Luke Burkhart (Suzuki) 93,

250 Riders Championship - Although Shayne King (New Plymouth) has won four of the six races he finds himself behind Danny Ham (Australia) who has only won one race to date. The current titleholder King, is being pressed by the unsung Peter Broxholme (Tauranga) who has put two solid meetings together.

Points
Ham (Suzuki) 125, S King (Honda) 122, Broxholme (Honda) 120, Shaun Fogarty (KTM) 107.

500 Riders Championship - The King kindred are separated by Corrie Sargent (Wellington). Sargent, the two Kings (Darryll and Shayne) and Troy Carroll (Australia) have broken away from the field and will provide plenty of excitement this weekend with a maximum of 75 points to be banked before the show moves to Pukekohe in October for the last chapter of the SSANGYONG NZ 2004 MX CHAMPIONSHIP.

An extra factor for the leaders to assess is the inclusion of 21 year old American, Rory Sullivan. The Portland, Oregon rider has heard that this is where world champions are made and is joining the series halfway through. Sullivan has recently been competing in the Canadian Motocross Championships - he has a lot of arena and supercross experience indicating that he might find the flat track with man made table tops to his liking.

Points
S King (Honda) 139,
Sargent (Honda) 125,
D King (Yamaha) 114,
Carroll (Yamaha) 110.
