A frosty and clear day for the second round of the Ssangyong NZ National Motocross series in Rotorua provided testing conditions, but with racing underway it was 500cc series leader Shayne King who again showed his class and put space between his Honda and the other riders.

King not only showed his class in the 500cc events, but was also more impressive by winning 2 of the 3 races in the 250cc class. He is now within 3 points of the 250cc series lead, a title he first won in 1987. “It was a good day for me in Rotorua” commented King, “I had the goal of winning as many races in the 250cc as possible, and I was very consistent. Its great to have pulled a few points back in the overall championship.”

Fellow 250cc Honda rider Peter Broxholme struggled to find the racing line in the first Moto, but after watching the 125cc class came back to finish 2nd in the second race, and take the win in the last 250cc race of the day. “Line choice was very important today” said Broxholme. “The track was very technical, you really had to set up passes. Once I had that figured out I was away”.

Corrie Sargent showed his consistency in the 500cc class, with three podiums from the three races and is well placed in 2nd overall. While he couldn’t quite match the King brothers, Sargent is upbeat heading into his hometown round in Wellington. “The track was very demanding this weekend and I was pleased how well the bike and I handled it” he said. “I rode solidly, not at my best, but I still have championship hopes. I really want to win my hometown round in Wellington on September 26”

Defending 125cc champion Cody Cooper showed he still has good form, being the second Honda rider to finish the day with three podiums from three races, despite suffering from the flu. “I went as hard as I could and considering how I feel with this flu, I am happy with my consistency today” said Cooper.
Cooper is only 9 points off series leader Daryl Hurley [Suzuki] and will be pushing for a lead when the riders head for round 3 in Wellington on 26th September.
