Coppins on the podium in Germany.

Motueka’s MX star, Josh Coppins has ridden to a consistent overall podium place at the 14th round of the MX1 World Championships in Gaildorf, Germany. Coppins who was recently crowned British Open champ tried his best to make an impression on championship rivals, Stefan Everts and Michaël Pichon, but the Kiwi had to be content with two third places.

“Lizzard” had his work cut out for him at the start of race one as he fought from fifth to third, then trailing Everts and Pichon. The leading duo had managed to open up a reasonable gap over the CAS Honda rider and Coppins was not in a position to take any risks in trying to catch up. The track was getting hammered due to the overnight rain showers so Coppins rode his own race and cruised to his first podium finish of the day.

Coppins was hoping to get a better start in race two and challenge for the lead. The Kiwi missed out on the all important hole-shot. He made an aggressive pass on Belgian, Steve Ramon and moved into third, once again placed behind Pichon and Everts. Pichon had already checked out so “Lizzard” tried to set his sights on Everts who was just a few seconds ahead. Neither rider would make any major mistakes and their positions were unchanged until the chequered flag.

“Today was quite difficult for me” admitted Coppins “I’ve never really done that well at Gaildorf in the past so getting two thirds today is quite alright. The track was rough and took plenty of energy from me. Ireland should be quite exciting in two weeks time,” said Coppins.
