Coppins wraps up British Open Championship with a perfect score.

Motueka born, Josh “Lizzard” Coppins, has won his first British title today at the penultimate round in Pontrilas, U.K. The CAS Honda hero blasted out another pole position in the morning qualifying session and was once again the man to beat on a track that would turn out to be rough and rutted due to an overnight downpour.

Coppins made a slight mistake on the first lap of race one as both feet were torn of the foot-pegs by a deep rut. The Kiwi regained his composure and fought back from fourth position to take the lead a few laps later. Nobody could find the speed to catch the factory Honda CRF450 Kiwi rider and Lizzard cruised across the finish line with more than twenty seconds over his nearest challenger.

Heat two would prove to be a title confirmation! Coppins grabbed the hole-shot, as he has done so many times this season, and then continued to disappear into the distance. Coppins’ closest challenger came in the form of Billy MacKenzie however the youngster was sixteen seconds adrift as Coppins took his fifth double win of the season and indeed the coveted British Open MX title.
“It’s great to be British champ,” grinned Coppins “The team have been really brilliant and this makes it their fifth consecutive British title – that must be some sort of record! I’m happy I could play a part. I’m also pretty pumped about wrapping up the title with one round to go. I can focus on the GP’s even more now!”

Coppins heads to Gaildorf in Germany next weekend for round 14 of the MX GP championship where the Kiwi will challenge Everts and Pichon for the GP win.
