Yamaha - Press Release:

CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha rider Darryll King was crowned the 2004 Pro Open Champion at the final round of the Maxxis Mr Motocross Outdoor Series at Victoria’s Wonthaggi motocross circuit.

King held a 48 point lead coming into the round and a win in the first of two x thirty minute motos was enough to give the reigning champion his second consecutive Australian Motocross title. Despite a valiant effort CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha’s Cameron Taylor tied on round points with Pro Lites series leader Cody Cooper which left the Yamaha rider with second position in the championship.

The first of the Pro Lites motos was red flagged twenty minutes into the thirty minute race following an on track incident that required the ambulance. For safety reasons the race was re-started and re-run in its entirety after a forty minute delay. Taylor struggled off the restart and had to fight his way to the front of the field taking the lead mid race. Championship leader Cody Cooper put in a late charge taking the lead with only a couple of laps to go the Yamaha rider had to settle for second with Troy Dorron third.

In the second Pro Lites race Taylor and Cooper fought it out at the front of the field for most of the race until Taylor pulled out a lead near the end of the race. While Taylor won the race and the round it was Honda’s Cody Cooper who took the Pro Lites championship crown with Taylor second and Troy Dorron third.

Taylor said this was the third time he had finished runner up in the Australian Motocross Championships. “What is the old saying always the bridesmaid never the bride,” Taylor said. “I gave it everything I had today but Cody was just too good. “Full credit to Cody he has ridden brilliantly all season and really deserves this title."

Taylor’s Pro Lites team mate Daniel McCoy suffered mechanical problems in the first race after his radiator filled with mud causing overheating problems for his Yamaha YZ250F. After a bad start in the second Pro Lites moto, McCoy fought hard to work his way through to finish in sixth place.

In the first Pro Open moto Darryll King and CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha team mate Troy Carroll found themselves in a battle for second place with Honda’s Shayne King after KTM’s Cheyne Boyd took the holeshot and pulled out an early lead. Always the tactician, Darryll King strategically challenged Boyd with five laps to go to take the lead and the 2004 Championship title. Cheyne Boyd finished second followed by Shayne King (Championship runner up and younger brother of Darryll King) and CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha’s Troy Carroll.

In the second Pro Open moto Darryll King settled for third behind Shayne King and Cheyne Boyd after King and Boyd pulled out a five second lead on the champion rider. “I am absolutely delighted with the way I went this year,” King said. “There were a few people out there who thought I might be too old and I am pleased to have proven them wrong. “I have to thank the whole CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha team they gave me a fantastic bike to compete on, which really gave me the confidence to do what ever I needed to do to win. “I will now be focusing my attention to winning the New Zealand Motocross Season which started last weekend,” King said.

Troy Carroll proved he was on the pace before a bout of arm pump forced him to back off in the second pro open race today.

The CDR/Boost Mobile/Yamaha team will now prepare for the opening round of the 2004 Supercross Masters at Adelaide Entertainment Centre next weekend.
