While much of the lower North Island was battered by rain and wind, Manawatu challenged the odds with a mostly fine day, only succumbing to one light shower. This produced almost perfect conditions for the first round of the Spectro SX4 Winter Motocross Series held at Himitangi on Sunday.
A turnout of 180 riders, on the natural terrain sandy based track provided a great start to the series. Under a new format of combining age group, machine capacity and ability racing, the scene was set to find the all-round king of winter motocross racing. As the track got rougher in the soft sandy conditions, the tough men of the sport shone through to establish an early point lead in the series. Stand out riders were Cam Smith (Marton - Honda CRF 450), James Robinson (Palmerston North - Honda CRF 250) and teenage star, Brett Turnbull (Palmerston North - Suzuki RMZ 250).
In the junior classes, National 85cc champion Tommy Madams (KTM SX 85 & 125) was in great form. To complete a class double he was riding back to back races showing signs of why he is the national champion and why he qualified for the recent World Junior Champs in Latvia.
The next round is in Central Hawkes Bay on October 17th.
