MNZ Press Release:

SSANGYONG NEW ZEALAND 2004 MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUND 1 ~ TIMARU SUNDAY 8TH AUGUST

125cc
This class had very strong fields and produced some of the best racing on the day – especially the last race where Daryl Hurley (Hawera) was tested right down to the chequered flag by Barry Morris (Wellington). Hurley won the day by taking out the first and last races; the second race was won by Michael Phillips (Rotorua). Current champion, Cody Cooper (Mt Maunganui) didn’t have his best day but still finds himself locked into second equal with Scott Columb of Queenstown.

250cc:
This is the last time for the 250cc class, next year New Zealand will fall into line with the rest of the world and only host two Championship classes. The hard luck story of the day went to Shayne King (New Plymouth) with two wins under his belt and a good lead in the third race his bike died on him, that meant that the honors for the day went to Australian visitor Danny Ham, he holds a eleven point lead over the consistent Peter Broxholme (Tauranga) with Shaun Fogarty (Gisborne) completing the placings. Current title holder Shayne King finds himself in the unlikely position of fifth, but with three rounds to go he is certain to improve.

500cc
Shayne King had better luck in this class and is looking good to defend his 2003 title. With two wins he has a six point lead over brother Darryll (Hamilton). Corrie Sargent (Wellington) started the day sensationally by betting both Shayne & Darryll King in the important first race. Multi Australian Championship winner, Troy Carroll, was consistent enough to command fourth place.

Womens:
16 year old Katherine Prumm (Pukekohe) totally dominated with three emphatic wins. That left Elyse Wadsworth (Blenheim) and Mary Perkins (Hawkes Bay) to shuffle the minor placings.

The next round for the men’s classes is in three weeks time in Rotorua
