Edmondson wins round three of UK XC series

Honda Racing Fast Eddy rider Paul Edmondson claimed his third Pro Open two-stroke class win of the year at round three of the UK Cross-Country series held at Culham, Oxfordshire last weekend where the former world enduro champion also managed to top the overall Pro class results.

With the Open two strokes the third and final class to leave the start line, Edmondson failed to take the holeshot and had to work his way to not only the front of the Open two-stroke class but then through the combined 125cc two-stroke and 250cc four-stroke and Open four-stroke classes en route to scoring 18 laps – one more than any other competitor.

With the Culham course making it difficult for any rider to make up time, Edmondson had to call upon his many years of US GNCC riding to race his way through traffic before stopping for the first of his two fuel stops. Having to stop once more to allow his mechanics to fit a clean air filter, Edmondson again worked his way forward to claim the win at the end of the two-and-a-half hour race.

With HRFE team rider Paul Whibley still sidelined through injury, 125cc mounted youngster Simon Wakely put in a solid performance at Culham to place third in the combined 125cc two-stroke/250cc four-stroke class. After placing well off the start, Si mixed it with eventual first and second placed finishers Rowan Jones and Wayne Braybrook for much of the second half of the race before a second fuel stop saw him loose touch of the leaders.

Paul Edmondson:I think that physically this has been the hardest race I’ve done this year. I pushed hard for the full two-and-a-half hours - the only rest I got was when I came into the pits. I didn’t make the best of starts but being at the back of the field I’ve had to work my way past so many riders. It was really difficult to make up any real time on anyone because everyone was riding at the same pace on the motocross sections of the course and it was hard to pass in the trees. Simon also rode really well in the 125cc/250cc four-stroke race, and my mechanic Giorgio finished second in the Open two-stroke Clubman race, so it’s been a good day all round for the team.
