Oceania Challenge 2004

A team of four New Zealand 600 Sports Production riders will resume the Oceania rivalry when they take on Australia’s best Supersport riders at Phillip Island at the Australian GP on October 16/17.

The Oceania challenge, won easily by Australia last year, is a support race at the premiere meeting held in this region.

Brian Bernard, winner of The Wanganui Street Race and third in the 2004 Suzuki NZ Production Superbike Championship will again manage the team.

Last year we were outgunned by a very competitive Australian team, commented Bernard. “This year we will be better prepared and we understand the technical differences between Australia and New Zealand much better - this year the chosen riders will have their bikes prepared for Australian specification,” said Bernard from his Wanganui base.

MNZ CEO, Trevor Gill, outlined the selection criteria. “This time we are looking to send some younger riders who have performed well at national level. The race comes at an awkward time for most NZ riders so we will announce the team earlier than we did last year.” MNZ will announce the team at the end of August
