Autumn Series 2004 Final Results

Tauranga riders did their club proud and took ten of the 12 first place trophies that were up for grabs in the final round of the Autumn Series held last Sunday at the Tauranga Motorcycle Club’s track at Rowe Road Ohauiti. This was quite an achievement view the strong competition from increasing numbers of quality riders from the greater Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland that are attracted to events organized by the Tauranga club.

The main track spectators were treated to a display of brilliant riding by national motocross team member Mason Phillips who rode in both senior grades “just for practice” but was ineligible for a series prize. Regular local senior riders took up his challenge and excelled in their own right with Dion Steiner edging out Robbie Stewart and Carl Williams for first place in the 250cc 2 stroke to 450cc 4 stroke class and Robert Carter from Opotiki in the 125cc 2 stroke to 300cc 4 stroke class held onto his overall lead on a greasy track finishing on the day behind Ohope’s Joel Byrne and in front of the hard chasing Breingan brothers.

It is encouraging to see the increasing numbers of Junior riders participating in events. A field of over 20 riders competed in the 85cc class where once again Scott Barr-Smith showed his domination and made the top spot on the podium his with another round of 4 straight wins. In the same group, Roydon White of Tokoroa did not, on the day, match the skills and speed of Tauranga riders Steven Rudd and Luke Henry nor of Brenton Voorend from Te Awamutu. However, he proved that as far as a series is concerned, consistent riding can be a winning factor when he collected the second place overall trophy ahead of absent 3rd place-getter Ryan Metz of Tauranga.

The keenness and competitiveness on the mini track is a delight to see. Spectators cannot help but notice the progress made throughout the series by all the young riders from beginner 4 year olds to “experienced” 9 and 10 year olds passing by all the levels in between. Parent and spectator support both on and off the track is appreciated by both the young riders and the club organizers. It is encouraging also to see more and more female riders on both the main and mini tracks.

The 80cc Trail class was particularly hotly contested on Sunday with 3 different riders each winning a race. Matt Price from Te Puke won on points for the day but the series first two places went to Putaruru riders Cameron Dodunski and Troy Van Der Hayden respectively, with a rapidly progressing Matthew Riley from Tauranga in third.

Rain on the Friday evening prior had left the main track a little to greasy for the small wheeled 65 class so they returned to the mini track for this final round. Logan Blackburn has replaced his recently stolen bike and won top points for the day but a fired up Jarrod Saville kept his head and took out first place for the series followed by the ever battling Amber Royal and Tyler Breingan. In the 60cc class Lee Ormsby, Camerin Shugg and Trent Smales fiercely contested the minor placings. Jessie Waterhouse from Tauranga and Hayden Shaw from Putaruru however topped the points for the day whilst the series win went to Tauranga’s Scott McIntyre.

Both the Japanese and the European 50cc classes proved equally competitive. Raglan’s Isaak Moore on his KTM 50 and Tauranga’s Cameron Forlong on his XR50 each made clean sweeps on the day in their respective classes but missed out on the first place overall trophies. These were garnered by Tauranga riders Aaron Wiltshier and Reece Pudney. The top names did not have easy rides however. In the European category, Cameron Stewart and Cody Merito applied strong pressure as did Kerran Saville, LoganWise, Dylan Breingan, Alex Blackburn and Clay Merito. On the Japanese machines, Shannon Wagstaff, Tyler Steiner, Joshua Van Der Heyden and Scott Yearbury made their presence felt and Hamish Gambitt coped well for his first race day on a 2 wheeler.

There is such a potential in these youngsters that the club is holding a training day for mini riders only on June 26th. Peter Broxholme will be providing the tips and guidance.

The Autumn Series may have finished but club activities continue. Next month on July 11th sees the start of a 4 Round Winter Series and the winter maize paddock fun days are scheduled to start at the end of July. All riders and spectators are welcome to all events.
