Coppins Misses Out on Overall Podium

Soaring temperatures and spectator packed hillsides have set the scene for the ninth round of the MX world championship in Gallarate, Italy.

CAS Honda rider, Josh Coppins, started his first race of the day with a reasonable start and the kiwi was shadowing championship leader Stefan Everts in sixth position after the first lap mayhem. Everts and Coppins passed Frenchman, Pichon with the trio then gradually reeling in the leading pack. Coppins slipped in tight left hander and Pichon could not avoid hitting the Kiwi’s back wheel. " Lizzard" was quick to pick up his bike and get back into the race. With the leading pack gone, Coppins fought his way through to sixth but had missed out on a wanted podium.

"I was not getting enough grip through the turns so I was surprised I could hang with Stefan. I had a slight problem with the tyre mousse which was detrimental on this type of circuit. I need to be up there in the start to make any impression" said Coppins.

"Lizzard" did just that with a brilliant hole-shot in race two. The glory was short lived though when Pichon and Everts passed the New Zealander with Coppins having no answer for their onslaught. Coppins set into his own rhythm and rode a consistent race to the chequered flag without being able to pose a threat for the lead.

"The start was much better this time round, but I couldn’t hold onto it for long. Stefan and Pichon were just better than me today. I tried to tag on but they were really on it. I’m disappointed with the first race as that caused me to miss out on the overall podium for today," explained Coppins.
