MNZ - Press Release:

NZ TEAM TO THE JUNIOR WORLD
MOTOCROSS CUP, LATVIA:

New Zealand will use all six of its allocated spaces at the FIM Jnr World Cup in Kegums, Latvia on 16-18 July. The championship, extended this year for riders up to 19 years old, is held every year during the European summer. Each country is allocated six starts, three each in 85cc and 125 cc.

Trevor Gill, MNZ CEO, announced today that MNZ fully supported the team. \"We don’t actually select a team for this because of the distance and the cost involved. However, a group of riders, under the guidance of parent Noel Curr (Blenheim) started planning and fundraising for this campaign late last year. We are delighted that for the first time we will use our full allocation of starting places.\"

The traveling team is:

125cc
Kirk Bezzant(Cambridge)
Tim Curr( Marlborough)
Blake Gillard(Auckland)

85cc
Tommy Madams(Wellington)
Nick Sword( Christchurch)
Mason Wilkie(Wairarapa)

The team of under 19’s has a wealth of domestic and international experience. Curr, Madams, Wilkie and Gillard have been to the event before. Mason Wilkie won the Asian Jnr Championships in Macau last year he was badly injured soon after. Tommy Madams is the current NZ 85cc titleholder, he won this two months ago at the NZ Jnr Championships.

Both Gillard and Curr are graduates of the Motorcycling NZ High Performance Programme.

Noel Curr, the architect of the campaign, has put together an extended European build up,\" We are looking to do events in Germany before and after the worlds and we will spend three days in Belgium, hopefully this will include some time with Kiwi motocross stars Ben Townley and Josh Coppins,\" said Mr. Curr. Townley, who is only 19, is currently leading the World 125 Championship and Coppins is third in the MX1 class.
